Level 2, Part 1 Exercises

This is a collection of exercises for the entire group to be finished for the first meeting.

For The First Meeting

  1. Read the support material for Part 1 and write down any questions that arise for discussion in the first meeting.

  2. Based on the notes for this Part as well as any material from Level 1:

    1. Write a brief one or two sentence statement about your content.

    2. Prepare a 5 minute presentation on your content. Some ideas to help you think about this are:

      1. What is the nature of your thematic content? The more focused and precise you can be about what you want to express, the better.

      2. Can you see an evolution in this content by examining your past body of work?

      3. Do you have thoughts about where you want to take your thematic ideas?

      4. In terms of expression, what are the key characteristics you want your work to show?

      5. How successful have you been in capturing unique qualities of mood, feeling and viewer engagement in your past and present work?

      6. Can you trace the emergence of a personal style by looking back over past work?

      7. How would you like your mode of expression to change over future work?

  3. Bring 2-3 pieces of recent work to the meeting for critique and discussion. You now have some experience with and some understanding of critical analysis.

    1. For each piece prepare a 5 minute presentation on how you used your working process to identify and fix problems.

    2. Prepare for each, a summary statement on where you think it's at:

      1. Is it finished?

      2. Do problems remain and if so, what are they?

      3. Are you satisfied?

      4. Did you start with or develop a goal during the painting? How well did you meet it?

      5. Can you do better?

      6. Where do you go from here?
